Daily OM

I read this article and smiled. It is important to be a part of the world and the one of best ways is to start in your own community. If everyone gave a little of themselves today, just think where we would be tomorrow....

Giving the Gift of You
Serving Your Community
Being of service to our community is part of being a good citizen of the planet earth.

To live harmoniously, we need to be supportive and helpful to all people, creatures, and plant life that share this earth with us. While “being of service” is part of being a good citizen of the world, it also feels good to help others. When we do something for others in service, without the expectation of anything in return, we are turning our actions into offerings.

There are many ways to be of service to our community. There are the obvious and much needed volunteer opportunities, such as serving Thanksgiving dinner at a shelter, mentoring our youth, or cleaning up a beach. Then, there is the kind of service that we may not even think of as being acts of service. Learning a new language (perhaps sign language) so that you can talk to more people is a way to reach out to others. Inviting someone who isn’t motivated enough to exercise on their own to join you on your daily walk is a way to give of yourself. Sharing flowers or vegetables from your garden, organizing a poetry reading, offering to babysit for a busy parent, or donating pet food to an animal shelter all are simple ways to offer your services to your community.

There are many ways that you can serve the world. Imagine the impact we would have on the environment if we picked up one piece of trash off the street every day and chose not to drive our car once a week. Even gardening tactics such as throwing wildflower seeds onto a vacant lot can brighten the lives of others – including the lives of birds and insects. Every day, you can do something to make this world a better place. During meditation, ask for guidance on what you can do to be of service. This can be a wonderful way to start your day. Smiling at a stranger who looks down in the dumps or teaching your neighborhood kids how to whistle will impact someone’s day or even their life. Giving of yourself is the best gift that you can give.

Asgard (Day of Understanding)

Today started off with a light breakfast and errands. I had to drop off my class samples before noon and use our coupon for 50% the filter for the refrigerator. When we got back home I thought it would be good to read the first chapter of my textbook then I looked at a few examples at Kahn Academy After a little lunch, I packed my back and left for my first day of school! I felt like such a kid!! We didn’t really go over anything substantial. It is a nice campus and I am really glad I am doing this. I spent most of the evening doing homework and reading the textbook.

Before I left for class, I pulled a rune. It was Laguz (water). This is a symbol of flowing – not just water but thoughts emotions. I knew this was a good sign because I would not run into anything hidden or submerged. Then I realized it is the letter “L” which to me stands for Lilith. As soon as I realized that, I felt so calm and knew everything would be fine.

Freya’s Day – Jotunheim (Day of Discovery)

Today I spent the day working on cards. I finished making my blog hop card and taking pictures of the process. Today’s rune was Nauthiz (needfire) – the survival rune. All I can do is prepare for the coming storm but I cannot stop it from coming. I see this as a sign I still need to be prepared for the calculus course.

I finished the cards and am happy with the results. Now I just have to write the directions…

Midgard (Day of Immersion)

We got up at 8:30 to start dinner – short ribs! We were having friends over and needed to get them in the slow cooker by 9. After that, we went back to bed for a while. After breakfast, I tried to work on the cards for class and the blog hop but I wasn’t inspired. It is down to the wire and I am getting anxious. I start school on Monday and I am not studying and I am not making cards. There is so much left to do and so little time. When I pulled my rune today and it was Kenaz, I was excited at the prospect of inspiration unfortunately it didn’t come. Instead I went back to bed and rested. When I got up I felt so much better.

Svartalheim (Day of Adventure)

The rune I pulled this morning was Teiwaz – reversed (Lack of motivation). This is very true. I prepared for class last night but this morning packing my box, I realized I was missing a lot of things. I didn’t cut some paper and cut too much of another. I have also been fighting with my creativity. It is true the harder I try the less I get done.
